How to get better at the things you care about?

How to get better at the things you care about?

任何工作或職務,
做一段時間後,
難免有停滯期,
這段期間,
即使費心力,
似乎很難有所突破。
Eduardo Briceño在演說中,
以the learning zone和the performance zone指出
造成原地踏步的原因所在。
首先區別這兩者。
*The learning zone
Goal: Improve
Activities for Improvement
Concentrate on: Haven't mastered yet
Mistakes to be expected
*The performance zone
Goal: Do as best as we can
Activities for execution
Concentrate on: Have mastered
Mistakes to be minimized
兩者之間的差異處:
The performance zone maximizes our immediate performance, while the learning zone maximizes our growth and our future performance.
一些工作,
例如教育工作、醫學界,
之所以會停滯,
常常是因為認為自己已夠好,
能勝任,
而再也不在the learning zone進行deliberate practice,
刻意就不足之處,
精進,
允許犯錯,
向人請益,
而一味停在the performance zone 。
Eduardo Briceño以Demosthenes為例,
分享他為了精進專業所下的功夫,
很獨特,
也真有心,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demosthenes。
Eduardo Briceño的建議:
*So the way to high performance is to alternate between the learning zone and the performance zone, purposefully building our skills in the learning zone, then applying those skills in the performance zone.
兩者可相輔相成。
*...the more time we spend in the learning zone, the more we'll improve.
要學,才會進步。
另外,犯錯是the learning zone極寶貴的學習歷程,
也常帶來實質的進步。
但是,
現在的教育環境,
職場,
所重視的是正確答案,
好表現,
因而都是屬於the performance zone,
久而久之,
就少了創造力和進步的空間。
因此不要忽略了the learning zone的重要元素:
the observation, reflection and adjustment....
在處處重視doing和performing的時代,
個人也可以有所為:
以低風險,
從事
exploring, asking, listening, experimenting, reflecting, striving and becoming...
不斷地學習,
才能增自信。
學習、嘗試、犯錯、改進、修正,
都是增進好表現的養分。
很有啟發性的分享。

The benefits of a bilingual brain

The benefits of a bilingual brain

學習雙語或多語,
除了旅遊方便,
看電影不用字幕,
也會讓腦的樣子及運作,
和只會單一語言的人的腦不同。
語言能力一般都從四方面來看:
two active parts: speaking, writing
two passive parts: listening, writing
根據學習語言的情境及如何習得,
可大致分為三大類:
1. a compound bilingual
-developing two linguistic codes simultaneously, with a single set of concepts
(例如,幼兒的語言學習)
2. a coordinate bilingual
-working with two sets of concepts
(例如,青少年在校、在家學習、使用不同語言)
3. subordinate bilinguals
-learning a secondary language by filtering it through their primary language.
(例如,成年人的學習模式)
這三大類型,
都可能精通英語,
儘管accent或pronunciation會有所不同,
一般人或許看不出他們學習的歷程。
但是現代brain imaging technology的技術,
已能讓神經語言學家觀察特定的語言學習如何影響雙語者的腦。
人類的腦,
The left hemisphere is more dominant and analytical in logical processes,
while the right hemisphere is more active in emotional and social ones,
(though this is a matter of degree, not an absolute split)
因此有the critical period hypothesis。
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_period_hypothesis
http://www.zwbk.org/MyLemmaShow.aspx?zh=zh-tw&lid=110252
如果這個假設為真,
孩童因為腦的發展具彈性,
能利用左右hemispheres習得語言,
成人則比較側化(lateralized),
通常是左邊。
因此可能造成以下的差異:
*learning a language in childhood
→may give you a more holistic grasp of its social and emotional contexts.
*people who learned a second language in adulthood
→exhibit less emotional bias and a more rational approach when confronting problems in the second language than in their native one.
但是不管早或晚學雙語,
都會給大腦顯著的優勢,
例如, higher density of the grey matter (灰質)。
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_matter
同時使用雙語,
多動腦,
可以使阿滋海默症或失智病延後5年發作。
雙語可以提升腦的認知能力,
已是普遍的認知,
但1960年代前因為具瑕疵的研究,
導致有學雙語會妨礙孩童腦的發展的錯誤說法。
學雙語,
對於the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex(背外側前額)的發展有助益。
(the part of the brain that plays a large role in executive function, problem solving, switching between tasks, and focusing while filtering out irrelevant information)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorsolateral_prefrontal_cortex
http://doc1856.blogspot.tw/2009/12/blog-post_19.html
影片對雙語學習做了結論:
So, while bilingualism may not necessarily make you smarter, it does make your brain more healthy, complex and actively engaged。
也許有些人錯過孩童學習語言的關鍵期,
但是多學不同的語言,
總不嫌遲。
多學、多用不同語言,
是頭腦的健康操喔!

Breaking the language barrier

Breaking the language barrier

Tim Doner為polyglot,
(a person who speaks, writes, or reads a number of languages.)
他在高中時代,就學了20種語言。
在影片中,
也展現了多聲帶。
他分享了他學習語言的歷程。
他指出
...knowing a language is a lot more than knowing a couple of words out of a dictionary.
他用各種方式學語言,
rap music
grammar books
watching TV shows
他也上傳他的多聲帶影片到YouTube,
引起很多迴響和交流。
I had a community of speakers to interact with and essentially had a teacher or conversation partners for any language that I wanted to do.
他也用Method of Loci(位置記憶法)。
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Method_of_loci
http://terms.naer.edu.tw/detail/1305367/
他和別人交談,交流,也使用新的語言技巧。
Getting exposure也是學習語言的不二法門之一。
他引用Nelson Mandela的話,
陳述他學習語言的動機:
If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.
If you talk to him in his language that goes to his heart.
他指出語言和思想,
語言和文化都有其相關性。
語言打開文化的世界視野。
他也提醒想要學習語言的人,
...you can translate words easily but you can't quite translate meaning.
能把學習語言當興趣,
也學得有心得,
用對方式,
觸類旁通,
就能舉一反三,
越學越多。

Hacking Language Learning 黑客語言學習法

Hacking Language Learning
黑客語言學習法

語言學習,
常常是困難重重。
如何讓語言學習不再是那麼讓人心生畏懼,
有口難開,
Dr. Conor有方法。
他有感於世界上有許多語言正在消失中,
年輕的一代,
已漸漸不用少數的語言,
和族群中的長者有更大的generation gap。
Dr. Conor關切這個問題,
提出學習語言的秘訣,
希望能幫助人能跨越學習語言的障礙。
他先從心理建設著手:
*將接觸新語言視為a second childhood in a new language
*we have learned to shift our job, reframe our job.
To not from trying to seek out perfection, not making any mistakes,
but instead, just learning to cope well.
我們學語言的起初階段,
不是力求完美,
不犯錯,
而是去適應,
去學習。
也就是being effective, not perfect,
能用即興的方式溝通,
而不是說得道地。
*It's really intimidating, but mostly because we're all trying to juggle it all at once.
不要心想,一次通通學會語言,
分批來,從各面向,有方法學,
例如,
1. Pronunciation
發音,
不是"Listen and repeat after me."
要說明如何發出一些音,
再多練習。
同時,要掌握語言的rhythm and melody。
熟悉cadence (韻律)將讓我們對接收語言更順暢,
說話者的速度感覺變慢了。
2. Grammar
學文法的困難所在是
我們常將文法分開學,
沒有將之視為ecosystems,
彼此息息相關。
*It turns out all grammatical rules actually fall somewhere along the line
between the general conceptual and the conversation specific.
3. Vocabulary
各語言的字彙,
非常多,
我們不可能都學會,
先學the short words. The small words.
The little linking words. "Thing" is one of them.
The words like: and, or, but, of, the, who, what, when, where and why.
學常用的,
不會的字,
可以用繞個路表達,
或利用語境猜測字義,
或開口問。
學習語言,
接觸文化,
與人溝通,
人生不同。
Dr. Conor勉勵大家
Anybody can learn a language. Anybody can get that foot in the door,
which is the part that really matters.
You can do it. Right here. Right now.

五個學習語言的技巧

5 techniques to speak any language
五個學習語言的技巧

Sid Efromovich會說七種言語,
他分享快樂學語言的五個技巧。
1. Make Mistakes
學語言,要放輕鬆,不要怕犯錯。學習新的語言,面對不同的音和句構,
和我們原有的「language database」迵異,要允許自己犯錯。
2. Scrap the foreign alphabet
(scrap=to decide not to use a plan or system because it is not practical)
... there is nothing useful about using that foreign alphabet,
when you're trying to learn a language. Why? Because it will give you wrong signals.
Sid Efromovich建議用自己的語言系統揣摩新語言的發音。
3. Find a stickler
(stickler= one who insists on exactness or completeness in the observance of something)
找個人幫我們學習語言,
這個人鼓勵我們犯錯,
從中學習,
並協助我們達到語言想精熟的程度。
4. Shower conversations
展開練習,
隨時隨地,
就像淋浴時的自我對話,
你來我往,
進行對談,
可發現語言的不足之處。
5. Buddy formula
找到可以練習語言的夥伴,
兩個人一起探索語言,
相伴學習。
學習語言有方法,
才不感覺stressful, difficult and boring。
也才能體現學習語言,
進而了解不同文化和生活方式的美妙之處,
而可喜的是,
將也是了解自己的歷程。

Hackschooling Makes Me Happy

Hackschooling Makes Me Happy

成人常會問小孩,
你長大要做什麼。
Logan LaPlan有其想法。
他沒有受正規教育,
他的學習方式很不一樣。
他指出教育也是要能讓人快樂又健康。
他分享Dr. Roger Walsh的therapeutic lifestyle changes or TLCs:
Exercise, diet and nutrition, time in nature, contribution and service to others, relationships, recreation, relaxation and stress management, and religious or spiritual involvement.
Logan LaPlan從他所崇拜的滑雪選手悟出
hackers,其實不只存在科技世界 ,
滑雪的佼佼者本身就是hackers,
因為
Hackers are innovators.
Hackers are people who challenge and change the system to make them work differently and to make them work better.他認為這是一種心態。
他用他目前的在家教育及自學,
分享hackschooling的方式:
*Happy & Happy 8 TLCs
*Creativity Hacker Mindset
*Experimental Classes & Camps
*Technology & Online Resources
我特別喜歡他對親近自然的描述:
*Time in nature is really important to me. Its calm and quiet, and I just get to log out of reality.
*We learn to listen to nature, we learn to sense our surroundings and I’ve gained a spiritual connection to nature that I never knew existed.
Logan LaPla從操作、實驗、體驗,
運用社區資源及網路學習,
體悟出學習的重要及和生活或工作的相關性,
也指出有如在高山滑雪,
教育到底是要子孩走正規、安全的路,
還是要鼓勵他們去開創、去冒險,
培養其創造力,找到他們的天賦?
關心教育的夥伴們,
可以從這個演講得到領悟。

Why truly innovative science demands a leap into the unknown?

Why truly innovative science demands a leap into the unknown?

科學研究,
是繁複的探究過程,
過程充滿挑戰和艱困,
路徑並不是從A到B的便捷歷程,
而是時時陷在五里霧中的迷失感,
從A到未知的C的考驗。
心會挫折,
會想走安全的路徑,
因而不能有所突破。
Uri Alon的分享很受用。
他藉由寫博士論文的挫折,
及參加即興劇場演出的經驗,
提出the cloud的體驗,
I'm in the cloud,
表示我們在探究未知的領域,
cloud是介於known和unknown的之間的領域,
唯有置身cloud,
才能通往更新的發現。
在cloud之中,
我們需要同儕、支援 ,
也需要為自己打氣:
用Yes, and ...的心態,
發揮自己的創造力。
到達C,
我們將有幸發現從未碰觸的領域,
心將一片和詳。
一切的努力和堅持,
都是值得的。

*And what I might ask you to remember from this talk is that next time you face a problem you can't solve in work or in life, there's a word for what you're going to see: the cloud. And you can go through the cloud not alone but together with someone who is your source of support to say "Yes, and" to your ideas, to help you say "Yes, and" to your own ideas, to increase the chance that, through the wisps of the cloud, you'll find that moment of calmness where you get your first glimpse of your unexpected discovery, your C.

Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing

Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing
Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing是一本讓人對文法和語用豁然開朗的書。作者Mignon Fogarty 用不少篇幅指導讀者如何改進寫作用字、標點、大小寫、正確使用代名詞及寫電子郵件或簡訊應注意的事項。雖然這是一本談用字、語用及寫作風格(style)的書,卻是出人意料之外的有趣並且讓人讀得津津有味,若有所悟。書中的筆調輕鬆中又不失權威,解釋用法清楚易懂,可說是增進寫作功力的經典之作。
   本書一共有七個章節:

1. Dirty Words
    很精彩的一個章節,探討一般人常混淆的用字:
    A Versus An、Affect Versus Effect、Between Versus Among、Bring Versus Take、Each Versus Every、Less Versus Fewer、Then Versus Than、That VersusWhich、Lay Versus Lie及Who Versus Whom等。
e.g. Less Versus Fewer
The quick and dirty tip is that you use less with mass nouns
and fewer with count nouns. (p.27)
Memory Tricks:
(1) 10 items or less. (wrong) (物品是可以一件一件來數)
     10 items or fewer. (correct)
(由快速結帳 (express lane)的錯誤標示來記住less和fewer的區別。)
(2) 以圖文來強化印象
圖片描述:Aardvark坐在湖邊釣魚。
例子:There is less water in the lake. We'll have fewer fish for dinner. (p.29)

2. Grammar Girl on Grammar
    討論介系詞、不規則動詞、修飾語詞(modifier)的位置、dangling modefiers及假設語氣等用法。
e.g. Squiggly ate only chocolate.
(Squiggly ate nothing but chocolate---no fruit, no meat, just
chocolate.)
       Squiggly only ate chocolate
(All Squiggly did with chocolate was eat it. He didn't buy, melt, or sell it. He only ate it.) (p.62)

3. Let's Get It Started: Starting a Sentence
    討論句子的錯誤開頭及如何改善句子。
e.g. Don't  start a sentence with however, hopefully, a conjuncion (and, but, or, etc.), because, and a number. (p.83)

4. Punch Up Your Punctuation
    談標點符號的正確用法,很精闢,值得參閱。
e.g. Squiggly wanted a short haired dog.
(Could be read to mean that Squiggle wanted a short dog with hair.)
       Squiggly wanted a short-haired dog.
(More clearly means that Squiggly wants a dog with short hair.)
(p.98)

5. Big and Tall: Capitalization
    討論名詞大寫的原則。

6. Prozac for Pronouns: Getting the Stuntmen of Language Under
    Control
    討論代名詞的用法。

7. Internet Intervention
討論網路相關用語的用法 (Log in Versus Log on、URLs、Links...)及寫電子郵件及簡訊應注意的事項,值得參考。

8. I'm So Stylish: Style and Writing
    寫作應避免的事項 (用字累贅、使用陳腔濫調 (cliches)、過度使用so、very 及of等)。

9. Work It
    提示尋找故事靈感的方法、如何克服寫作的瓶頸及如何校訂等,頗具啟發性。

    本書中的結語進一步提示文法及語用為寫作的基礎,不可忽略,要力求精進:
I think of grammar and usage as the rules to the game of writing, and the rules are just the building blocks of creativity. Writing proper sentences doesn't ensure that your work will
be brilliant and inspiring, but knowing the rules can keep errors from marring your brilliance and inspiration.
---Mignon Fogarty  (p.191)

1. notice=no+tice
2. inside=in+side
很為這位同學高興,因為他漸漸地體悟用音節背單字的策略。

b10d71a3.jpg一些同學則從聽寫中發現他們背單字的問題:
1. 無法確實掌握單字的發音
    例如將airport聽成April。
2. 沒有確實分辨單字的母音
    例如混淆least/list、mat/mate、sour/sore、waste/west
                 等。
3. 字尾的發音沒記熟
例如ninth/knife、north/nose、swim/swing等。

如何背單字:
以下提供一些背單字的方法:
1. 了解單字

  bake

bek】動詞 (baking;baked;baked)  (音標/詞類/動詞三態)
To cook food in an oven.
;   (中/英意思)
  bake a cake/bread  (片語)
Mary is baking a cake for her daughter. (例句)

2. 除了懂得單字的意思之外,更要將單字及例句開口唸出來,增加學習的印象。
    多學、多應用字彙才是正確的學習方法。

3. 了解拼字和讀音的關係
     多聽多唸將有助於聽背單字。

4. 了解單字的組合
    例如preview=pre+view、bathroom=bath+room、friendly=friend+ly等。

5. 大量閱讀將有助於背誦單字及增加單字的熟悉度。

6. 利用圖畫字典,掌握圖與單字聯結。

Learning how to Learn

learning_how_to_learn.jpg
Learning how to Learn

This is a book about learning.

First, what is really learning?
According to the author, learning is understanding new things and getting better ways to do things.

One important factor influencing learning:

You have to decide what you want to learn.

Next, why do you study?
You do not study merely to pass a test. You study to use what you have learned.

There are some barriers to study:

1. Lack of Mass (缺乏實體物)

(Mass refers to the real things or the objects that you study about.)

2. The Skipped Gradient (跳過一個梯級)

(A gradient is a way of learning or doing something step by step.)

3. The Misunderstood word (誤解的字)

To overcome this barrier, you have to find the misunderstood word and look it up
in the dictionary. Look over all of the definitions an find the definition that fits

in what you are studying. Always try to learn more about the new word and use it in sentences.

In conclusion, the author stresses that learning is not hard to do and it can be fun. As

long as you can handle the barriers to study, you can learn anything you want to

learn.

(e.g. I have nothing to do with...),才能

fu19s.jpg
語言是一個嚴密而靈活的系統。
詞彙之於語言,
就像大海中的水滴,
語境就是詞彙的海洋。
水滴離開大海,
就會乾涸;
一個單詞,
只有融入語境,
才會有生命力。
而脫離語境來學習單詞,
無疑會事倍功半。
