3 thoughtful ways to conserve water

3 thoughtful ways to conserve water

Lana Mazahreh
1. Lesson one: tell people how much water they really have.
2. Lesson two: empower people to save water.
https://curiosocielo.wordpress.com/…/dont-let-our-future-d…/
3. Lesson three: look below the surface.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marina_Barrage

The surprising solution to ocean plastic

The surprising solution to ocean plastic

https://www.ted.com/talks/david_katz_the_surprising_solution_to_ocean_plastic

David Katz
他創立了the Plastic Bank。 https://www.plasticbank.org/ http://www.seinsights.asia/article/3289/3269/4961
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdLQLaZO10U *...social plastic is money. *It's not recycled plastic, it's social plastic, a material whose value is transferred through the lives of the people who encounter it, rich and poor.
Marks and Spencer、Henkel
...social plastic packaging, and you are indirectly contributing to the extraction of plastic from ocean-bound waterways and alleviating poverty at the same time.
https://www.plasticbank.org/app/#.W1roGNIzZPY
David Katz 很有自信地指出: ...we can all be a part of the solution and not the pollution. ...And so, OK, maybe cleaning the ocean is futile. It might be. But preventing ocean plastic could be humanity's richest opportunity.
David Katz

San Diego Zoo Sydney & Friends

San Diego Zoo
Sydney & Friends
 Don’t let the water run when you brush your teeth!
Animals and plants need lots of water too!
Please don’t waste it.
 Help your family recycle your soda cans and bottles.
They can be reused to save natural resources.
 Recycle your toys. Give them away.
Other kids will love them even after you get tired of them.
 Reuse paper grocery sacks for your arts and crafts projects.
They will save a lot of trees.
 If you get cold in the house, don’t turn up the heat.
Put on a sweater and warm socks.
This will save energy.
 When you visit parks and wild places, keep your dog on a leash.
This protects us smaller creatures.
 Please do not litter. Pick up trash you find along beaches and streams.
Some animals think that trash is food and eating it will make them very sick.
 Be kind to all animals.
Remember, we are all neighbors.

How pollution is changing the ocean’s chemistry

How pollution is changing the ocean’s chemistry

(ocean acidification, or the evil twin of climate change)。
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_acidification
http://highscope.ch.ntu.edu.tw/wordpress/?p=34382
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_series
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaii_Ocean_Time-series。

Hidden toxins in the fish we eat

Hidden toxins in the fish we eat

…if the ocean ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.
https://zh.wikipedia.org/…/%E5%A4%9A%E6%B0%AF%E8%81%AF%E8%8…
http://pub.cjps.ntpc.edu.tw/~cnn03001/2013-writing/p5.htm
http://www.hkredtide.org/big5/red.html

A thrilling look at the first 21 days of a bee’s life

A thrilling look at the first 21 days of a bee’s life

但是目前其最大的威脅來自Varroa destructor(瓦蟎).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varroa_destructor
http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%93%A6%E8%9E%A8
*...this pinhead-sized mite crawls onto young bees and sucks their blood. This eventually destroys a hive because it weakens the immune system of the bees, and it makes them more vulnerable to stress and disease.
They succeeded in breeding mite-resistant bees, but in that process, those bees started to lose traits like their gentleness and their ability to store honey.
...bees pollinate one third of our food crops.

Chimps have feelings and thoughts. They should also have rights

Chimps have feelings and thoughts. They should also have rights

Steven Wise,
legal things和legal persons。
http://www.nonhumanrightsproject.org/are-you-a-legal-person-or-a-legal-thing/
So for centuries, there's been a great legal wall that separates legal things from legal persons.
*legal things
...legal things are invisible to judges. They don't count in law. They don't have any legal rights. They don't have the capacity for legal rights. They are the slaves.
*legal persons
...legal persons. Legal persons are very visible to judges. They count in law. They may have many rights. They have the capacity for an infinite number of rights. And they're the masters.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somerset_v_Stewart
Lord Mansfield,
他認定...slavery was so odious,
Steven Wise
the Nonhuman Rights Project。
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonhuman_Rights_Project
...To draw a line in order to enslave an autonomous and self-determining being like you're seeing behind me, that that's a violation of equality.
...the extraordinary cognitive capabilities that they have, and they also resemble the kind that human beings have.
例如,
*They were conscious.
*They have some kind of moral capacity.
*They are numerate.
*They can engage in language.
*They have culture.
他說這是 a long-term strategic litigation campaign.
...they're not the end, they're not even the beginning of the end, but they are perhaps the end of the beginning.

What really happens to the plastic you throw away

What really happens to the plastic you throw away

被吸引到 vortex(渦流)。
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vortex
即為the Great Pacific Garbage Patch。
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_garbage_patch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qT-rOXB6NI
...most plastics don't biodegrade, which means they're destined to break down into smaller and smaller pieces called micro plastics, which might rotate in the sea eternally.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microplastics

by 詹麗馨

The earth is sick. Our mother is in deep pain."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biodiesel
1. Let it cool down to room temperature.
2. Transfer it to a clean container.
3. Use a funnel to avoid spills and a sieve to filter out any small food particles.
4. Take the container to recycling services that will pick up large amounts of grease.
Recycling used cooking grease turns goop into good.

What the people of the Amazon know that you don’t

What the people of the Amazon know that you don’t

a scientist who works in the rainforest to document how people use local plants。
和一些the isolated and uncontacted tribes接觸,
但是他指出there's plenty of holes in it.
*The rainforest has been called the greatest expression of life on Earth. There's a saying in Suriname that I dearly love: "The rainforests hold answers to questions we have yet to ask."
*the Amazon is the mightiest landscape of all. It's a place of beauty and wonder.
Uncontacted peoples hold a mystical and iconic role in our imagination. These are the people who know nature best.
...it's people like these that know things that we don't, and they have lots of lessons to teach us.
The elders are the libraries. Every time a shaman dies, it's as if a library has burned down.
Mark Plotkin
Let's think differently. Let's make a better world. If the climate's going to change, let's have a climate that changes for the better rather than the worse. Let's live on a planet full of luxuriant vegetation, in which isolated peoples can remain in isolation, can maintain that mystery and that knowledge if they so choose...

Photos that give voice to the animal kingdom

Frans Lanting
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwikwasut'inuxw
...underneath their separate identities, all animals are one

1. You can bring your own bag.
2. You can bring your own coffee cup.
3. You can bring your own water bottle.
4. You can grow your own fruits and your own vegetables.

The loves and lies of fireflies

The loves and lies of fireflies

natural selection, the struggle for survival, and sexual selection, the struggle for reproductive opportunity.
It's amazing to think that the luminous displays we admire here and in fact everywhere around the world are actually the silent love songs of male fireflies. They're flying and flashing their hearts out. I still find it very romantic.
...
These creatures speak their love in the language of light.
Sara Lewis
I hope we can find a way to keep these bright lights shining.

What ants teach us about the brain, cancer and the Internet

Deborah Gordon
