    I like what is told in the first paragraph,

Who knew that fathers were biologically equipped to nurture children?

This article points out that dads have a different parenting style from mums. What fathers do particularly well is promote children's independence and let go in a loving way. For examples, girls with involved fathers are more likely to stick with extra-curricular activities. So this article will sure inspire more dads to get involved in the upbringing of their children.

  • 3. "With His Own Two Hands"

He was an illegal immigrant making a living picking tomatoes. Now Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa excels in a different field-as a top brain surgeon.

I was really impressed with the struggles and the accomplishments of Quinones-Hinojos. It was not an easy to take, but he made a difference in his life by his endeavors and perseverance.

  • 4. "Spreading the Message"

Nobel Prize winner Rejendra Kumar Pachauri talks about his work on global warming.

Rejendar suggests that we can all help prevent global warming by

  • 1. Using energy sensibly.
  • 2. Using compact fluorescent lamps (螢光燈) instead of incandescent bulbs (白熾燈泡).
  • 3. Setting your air-conditioner at a level when we're not freezing.
  • 4. Only buying the things that we really need.

  我將其中和品格教育有關的16條整理出來,做為家庭教育與班級經營的參考。

  • 1. 天下沒有白吃的午餐,不要覺得自己有資格享受你不流汗爭取的事物。
  • 2. 設定目標,沉靜地、按部就班朝它們努力。

What I've learned from the book:

The author of this book, Rafe Esquith, incorporated the six level into his class, thus creating a classroom of fun, interaction, and trust. What's more splendid is that his classroom, Room 56, is void of fear.

The following are the six levels of Moral Development as mentioned in the book:

Level 1: Don't Want to Get in Trouble      

Level 2: I Want a Reward
(Proper behavior is expected, not rewarded.)

Level 3: I Want to Please Somebody

Level 4: I Follow the Rules

Level 5: I Am Considerate of Other People

      (You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.)

      (Kindness really is contagious.)

Level 6: I Have a Personal Code of Behavior and I Follow It

       (Level 6 behavior is the most difficult to attain and just as difficult to teach.)

  • 2. While reading the chapter, "Reading for Fun", I cannot agree with Rafe Esquith more as to his view of reading.
    (1) Teaching our children to read well and helping them develop a love of reading should be our top priorities.
    (That's what I endeavor to do in my own classroom.)

(2) Reading is not a subject. Reading is a foundation of life....If a child is going to grow into a truly special adult - someone who thinks, considers other points of view, has an open mind, and possesses the ability to discuss great ideas with other people - a love of reading is an essential foundation.

(Reading is arguably a habit that connotes thoughtfulness, education, and even high-mindedness.)  

  • (3) Our children need to have adults constantly reading and discussing books with them. We need to be the people we want our children to become.

   (A teacher should act as a model to his/her students by being an avid/a voracious reader.)

  • (4) In the end we must measure a child's reading ability by the amount of laughter exhaled and tears shed as the written word is devoured.

(Part of the fun of reading is in the joining our own experience to that of a story or a character. We feel, think, and understand. We develop empathy and compassion and become a better person.)

  • 3. In reading the chapter "Writing", I came across the sentence:

     Writing might just be the key that unlocks a child's heart.


     We should encourage our students to write their thoughts down so that they can keep track of what is happening in their lives. Writing enables students to become better thinkers and learners. It also helps them share their experience and ideas.


      There's a lot more to learn from this book. It's worth reading again and again.

   閱讀這本書最大的收獲是「發現自己買書、看書、品書、念書及戀書,從書海認識自己、認識世界何其幸褔!

   本書分為五個向度:
1. 書海茫茫,哪本書會改變你的一生?
A. 關於閱讀的至理名言
     a. 談到閱讀,無論你覺得自己有多忙碌,你都必須立刻找出時間閱讀,否則等於放任自己孤陋寡聞。
     b. 別強迫自己去讀你不喜歡的書,這世界上有成千上萬的好書,何必傻得把時間浪費在無法讓你愉快又受益的書上。

Why Do Clocks Run Clockwise?

  Why Do Clocks Run Clockwise? is a book for us to ponder a lot. In other words, it is a book of imponderables. In this book, the author, David Feldman, tries to solve mysteries that cannot be solved by numbers or measurements or standard reference books. In fact, he consulted about a thousand people to gather information for this book. So it is a really a mammoth job to get to the bottom of all of the imponderables in the book.

    David Feldman sparks our curiosity and entertains us by the 239 imponderables in this book. It is indeed worth reading.

    The title of this book is "Why Do Clocks Run Clockwise?". This imponderable reminds me that we often accept things as they are and never question the reason why. We simply ignore the question until we are challenged to think about it.

    So why do clocks run clockwise? Henry Fried, a horologist, gives a simple explanation:

    Before the advent of clocks, people used sundials. In the   
   northern hemisphere, the shadows rotated in the direction we  
   now call "clockwise". The clock hands were built to mimic the
   natural movements of the sun.

   But what would have happened if clocks had been invented in the southern hemisphere?

   It's also a good question.

   The book is humorous, witty, and fun. For example, let's read the first paragraph of "Why Can't they Make Newspapers that Don't Smudge?".

  Reading a newspaper might be good for the mind, but it ain't  
  great for the hands. After a bout with the Sunday paper, your
  hands are likely to look as if they have been engaged in a
  mudwrestling contest rather than an intellectual endeavor.

 The following are ten imponderables I am most interested in:

   1. What does 0in the Fahrenheit scale signify?

   2. Why do doughnuts have holes?  

   3. How did Xmas come to stand for Christmas?

   4. Why is one side of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil shiny and
       the other side dull?

   5. Why do traffic signs use red, yellow, and green lights? Why
       is the red light on top, green light on the bottom, and yellow
       light in between?

   6. Why do clocks run "clockwise"?

   7. Why does Coca-Cola from a small bottle taste better than
       Coca-Cola from a large bottle or can?

  8. What kind of hen lays extra-large eggs? What determines the
      size categories of chicken eggs?

  9. Why do trucks now say their contents are "flammable" when
      they used to say "inflammable"?

10. Why do hot dogs come ten to a package and hot-dog buns
     come eight to a package?

   I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy reading and thinking.

The South African leader who was imprisoned for twenty-seven years for fighting against apartheid

What do I learn from this book?

    Apartheid, in Afrikaans, means "separateness" and is pronounced "apart-hate." It first came to be known to the world in 1948. Black people under segregation laws were treated unfairly. For example, they were ordered to live in segregation areas, which were called "locations." Black men had to carry a document which noted whether they had permission to be where they were. In addition, Apartheid laws did not allow workers to bring wives and children to the city. Millions of black families were torn apart and broken in this way.

    Under harsh conditions, Nelson Mandela succeeded in becoming a lawyer. Being a lawyer, he was able to help desperate people who needed help to protect themselves against the unfair racial laws. After joining the ANC Youth League, Nelson Mandela entered a different path of life. He gave his time voluntarily, abandoning his practice and family, and expecting nothing in return apart from the liberation of his people.

   What are Nelson Mandela and the ANC Youth League strive for? Read the Freedom Charter as in the link.    

    With Nelson Mandela becoming more powerful and influential in the campaign for freedom, he was often under arrest. At last he was put in the prison, serving a life sentence. As a result, he lived a harsh and difficult life in prison for twenty-seven years.  Mandela consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom.When he was finally released, he was already seventy-two years old. Yet he did not suffer in vain. He did his best to help end apartheid and changed the life of many black people forever.

    A great man has changed the history of the world forever.

To Live is to Love

今年的基測出現了一首英詩,"To Live Is to Love",

我覺得這首揭示了生命的意義和愛的重要,

值得讓我們多探索生命的價值和意義。

Why does the sun come up every morning?

不可思議的成績進步法──日本補教界首度公開,寫給家長的教育指南

  讓成績「突飛猛進」應該是很多莘莘學子的願望。但要如何達成呢?這一本書的特別之處在於提出一些幫助成績落後學生大幅進步的方法。

  • 1. 著重基本,反覆練習並完全吸收基礎內容,遇到不會的問題,就要複習一次基礎部分,或是再度確認曾經學過的內容。
    (因此要提醒學生基礎功要做好。)
  • 2. 若是有一科擅長的科目,連態度或生活方式都會充滿自信。
    (產生自信才能有學習的動力!)  
  • 3. 掌握讀書的共同模式:
    閱讀、聆聽、書寫、查詢、記憶、思考的組合。
    (讀書不是看看就好,要深究、理解與統整。)
  • 4. 改善成績不理想可使用「行為科學教學法」:
    A. 教導做法
    B. 教導持續做好
    (這是這一本書一直強調的特點。我們常說要學而有方,並且持之以恆。其實是一樣的道理。)
  • 5. 在家學習的質與量決定了學業上的實力,重點在於孩子讀書的自主性有多高。
    (很可惜,看到不少學生回家就是電視時間或電動時間,花了大量時間在MSN,這也是許多學生未能按時完成作業,基礎未打好,學習困難的原因。)
  • 6. 讀書是數個行動的串連。讀教科書,聽老師講課,記重點筆記,解題,做功課,預習跟複習。
    (每個環節缺一不可。)
  • 7. 責備與稱讚的比率應該是1:4。
  • 8. 行為科學不僅看結果,也會將焦點放在產出結果前的過程。
    (要肯定學生努力的過程。)
  • 9. 閱讀能力是學習的基本能力。閱讀能力不好會引發後續許多問題。
    (閱讀能力要培養,積極推動閱讀活動。)
  • 10. 多和自己比較。
  • 11. 背誦的科目,在於不斷地邊寫邊背。另外也要多朗讀。
  • 12. 得高分的要訣竅:
  • A. 回想背誦的內容,整理已了解的部分。
  • B. 不擅長的問題要設法弄懂。
  • 13.  其實問題不在於用功時間的長短,而是讀書的品質。不過先決條件是孩子養成定心坐在書桌前的習慣。
    (真是點出現在許多學生讀書效果不彰的原因!)

The news that impresses me most in this issue is as followed:

  • 1. " Talented Teen Triumphs": Bullied Boy Wins over Brits with His Angelic Voice

      Andrew Johnston won standing ovation when he attended the audition for Britain's Got Talent. The road to success was not an easy one for him. Andrew has been interested in opera since he was six years old. He got bullied for his love of opera. Fortunately, one of his primary school teachers noticed his talent and encouraged him to attend the cathedral's choir.     

When one of the judges heard about the bullying, he said to Andrew:

Andrew, the thing about school bullies is that they don't like you for one reason-you've got more talent than they can dream of ever having. Ever.

 Andrew was optimistic about the future. He said the bullying was over and done with. He didn't really want to think about that just now. He just wanted to get on with his singing.

   It is touching to know a bullied boy found solace in singing.

   Bullying hurts! No one should be bullied just because he is different!

  • 2. "Running for Their Lives": Activist Helps Homeless Take a Step in the Right Direction

      Anne Mahlum runs an organization Back on My Feet. She strives to fix the lives of the homeless in Philadelphia with long strides. By encouraging the hopeless people to run in the early morning, she has succeeded in changing their lives. One of the runners said that Anne had helped people see the hero in themselves.  

      Anne's care and love have made a difference in the runners' lives. She is a hero.

    這是一本能讓人對人際關係豁然開朗的書,值得細細品味!

   在採卿主任的部落格看到了這一篇「謝謝龍山和龍山說再見」: 

    86年到龍山至今已11年,受到照顧與栽培,得到學習和成長,
今年8月即將離開,許多的留念依依不捨,當然也充滿期待,
即將展開另一片的天地,擔任芳和國中的校長,我會一如往昔的做事態度,
盡心盡力、謙卑為懷、與人為和,舊雨新知一定要到芳和來坐坐,
這是一所"芳馨和美"的學校,就在大安區臥龍街,等您來喔!

鄭秀琴將於今年暑假榮退,
感謝校長六年來給我的關懷與照顧。
謹以陳採卿主任給鄭校長的畢業贈言,
讓大家更了解這位可敬又開朗的校長。


鄭校長的第一、龍山的唯一     文/ 陳採卿

教改的浪潮改變的不只是教育制度,也改變了學校文化和校園生態,龍山人感受最為深刻,85~90年間為龍山最艱苦、嚴重減班的黑暗時期,何碧燕校長於87年接下了領航人的重責大任,日以繼月、辛勤耕耘才逐漸穩定了師生的心,獲得社區家長的肯定認同,學生逐漸陸續回流,班級數回復到42班。91年校長四年任期屆滿,立刻受聘應邀至臺北市第一大校----仁愛國中,由鄭秀琴校長接下了第六任校長的棒子。

我覺得自己很幸運在龍山國中11年,都是擔任行政工作,歷經三位校長,有機會近距離地向她們學習,學習每個領導者不同的才能,由不同的職位、不同的角度去欣賞,發現每個人都如一座寶山。校長是我跟隨最久的,她從一位初任校長剛開始有些些生澀,很快地就熟練沉穩地帶領龍山一步一步踏實地向前走,95年第一任任期滿又連任2年,如今在龍山的最高峰,也是她自己最圓滿的時刻,選擇急流勇退,套一句俗話:「上台靠機會,下台靠智慧。」無疑的,校長應該就是最有智慧、掌握最佳機會的幸運兒,而龍山國中因為是幸福之地,才有緣能在享受到幸運校長的福氣,在校長的帶領下再創藍天。

如果學校還有晨鐘,校長應該就是那敲鐘人,每天當校園還在沉睡中,校長總是早早就等候在校門口,迎接學生和同仁,她的招牌笑容和爽朗笑聲,打開了師生沉睡的心靈,龍山國中美好的一天就從校長的一聲早安開始。

記得6月有一次的週會,校長語重心長略帶生氣的告訴全校同學,大家應該要一起愛護學校維護整潔,最近同學亂丟垃圾的情形讓校長很難過,決定不要再幫忙撿垃圾了。說的也是,校長的勤快愛整潔是有目共睹的,不只是撿垃圾,只要她看到假日後校園的髒亂,她就主動地加入掃地的行列,尤其是維也納森林和操場。颱風天校園的殘枝敗葉落滿地,她巡視校園馬上和職工一起動手,不辭勞苦掃到手都起泡泡。

勤勞是客家女人的特色,節儉也是不可忽視的本性,校長經常提醒同仁節約能源,龍山的經費雖因有社區大學的補助不虞憂心,但校長依舊耳提面命身體力行,讓學校的經費每年都可以結餘,在新政府節能省碳新政策之前,龍山早已率先,得到全國節約能源第一名當之無愧。

行政人員常私下談論校長是天生的領導者,率真、坦誠、公正、直言的個性很好相處,沒有心機有話直說不必費心猜忌,大家省下白必要的力氣可專注於業務,讓公務很容易順利推動。最讓人佩服的是開會的效率,她可以明快果決的裁示,不會耽誤用餐時間,讓大家可以回來安安心心吃自己的便當。值得一提的還有,身為一校之長她能兼顧家庭和學校,又能均衡事業發展和個人自我實現,看到校長為子女,善盡孝道照顧弟妹兄弟;為人母,盡心盡力扶養子女甚至照顧孫女,把各個角色扮演恰如其分,實為現代職業婦女的典範。

校長選擇龍山當她的第一也是唯一的校長職務,她說龍山是她永遠的娘家,龍山也將永遠紀錄著,校長為龍山寫下的歷史。

   印象中的錦繡老師似乎從未改變過---一樣的嚴謹、一樣的井然有序、一樣的古道熱腸。她是那種讓人由衷佩服,心服口服的人。而就也就是幾年來再難經營的班級終究能被她管的服服帖帖的原因。
   錦繡老師的仔細和耐心也是她的特異功能。最讓我印象深刻的是她的個人網頁:Ginger's English Classroom。她從多年前建置這個個人教學網頁以來,一直持續更新及增添資料。建置及維護個人網頁需要相當的時間和熱誠,所以由此可看出錦繡老師是個超級行動派的人。也因為她的奉獻,龍山國中英語領域的許多資料,包含教學觀摩教案、多元評量,教學活動與競賽及英語每日一句得以完整的保存並分享。

    錦繡老師整理資料及建立檔案的超級能力也是讓我嘖嘖稱奇的。她整理資料有條不紊,分類清楚,因此常能提供給大家相關的資料做為參考。她就是這麼一個有條理又認真的人!

    從錦繡老師身上,我學習到認真負責的態度、做事嚴謹不馬虎,以及高度的教育熱忱。感謝錦繡老師帶給我極深遠的影響,讓我立下心願做個更優質的教師。也要感謝錦繡老師多年來給我的支持及鼓勵,英語領域有她及大家的鼎力協助才能有今天的格局和規模。我們一起走過打拼的歲月。回首來時路,一切的努力和付出都成為美麗的回憶。

懂得學英文方法的人不少,可是,唯有持以之以恆的人才能更上一層樓。

  • 本書中有很多概念,值得參考。 
  • 1. 一旦找到了動機,就比較有恆心和毅力。
  • 2. 學英語,靠自己。英語環境,也要靠自己來營造。
    (購買有聲書、聽英語廣播及閱讀英語雜誌)
  • 3. 學英文沒有別的訣竅,只有一個「勤」字。
  • 4. 下定決心學英文的人,要養成每天接觸它的習慣,即使再忙,抽個五分 鐘、十分鐘也無妨。
  • 5. 只要會聽,經常連單字都能夠拼得出來,或拼個八九不離十,再翻一下字典便可以弄懂其涵意。
  • 6. 要永遠記住一個生字,有一個訣竅:反覆背誦。
  • 7. 先挑簡單的(教材)來學習,等過一陣子,難的也漸漸變容易了,這樣學起來比較輕,興趣與信心自然大增。
  • 8. 訓練英語思考的方法之一,便是查閱「英英辭典」。
  • 9. 學英文,永無止盡。
  • 10. 懂得學英文方法的人不少,可是,唯有持以之以恆的人才能更上一層樓。

Who Moved My Cheese?為經營管理之書,書中發人省思的故事則可應用於生活各層面。

書中主角:

Two mice:

  • 1. Sniff (means to breath in through your nose in order to smell something)
  • 2. Scurry (means to move very quickly with small steps)

----So the two mice could smell the change and take the moves.

Two people:

  • 3. Hem
  • 4. Haw

(Idiom: hem (hum) and haw means to take a long time to make a decision before they say something.

----So Hem and Haw complained and wailed about the change. It took a while for Haw to decide to move out for the cheese, but it seemed Hem could never bring himself to action.  

故事情節:

  • 1. Cheese Station C: a comfort zone
  • 2. The cheese in Cheese Station C was moved away/gone.
  • 3. Sniff and Scuff went out into the adventure in the maze to look for new cheese.
  • 4. Hem and Haw waited in Cheese Station C every day.
  • 5. Hem and Haw did nothing about the shortage of cheese.
  • 6. Sniff and Scuff found Cheese Station N ( a great supply of new cheese)
  • 7. Haw was tired of waiting. He decided to start out into the maze. Overwhelmed by his fear of the unknown, he was unsure of himself. Once Haw overcame his fear, he began to love the thrill of the exploration and adventure in the maze.
  • 8. Haw finally found Cheese Station N and rejoined Sniff and Scuff.
  • 9. What about Hem? Maybe he was still waiting in Cheese Station C. Maybe he was already on his way to turn a new leaf of life.

故事的象徵:

  • 1. Cheese: symbolizes what we want to have in life
  • 2. Maze: represents where you spend time looking for what you want.

書中佳句:

  • 1. We need flexible people who are not possessive about "the way things are done around here."
  • 2. Move with the Cheese!
  • 3. "Sometimes, Hem, things change and they are never the same again. This looks like one of those times. That's life! Life moves on. And so should we."
  • 4. Just looking ahead was becoming exciting.
  • 5. He knew when you change what you believe, you change what you do.
  • 6. He had to admit that the biggest inhibitor to change lies within yourself, and that nothing gets better until you change.
  • 7. Repeating the same behavior will just get you the same results.
