Why aren't we only using solar power?
我們所使用的能源有沒有可能完全使用太陽能?
太陽能,
照射到地球,
因為有無雲層的遮蔽,
而有 direct irradiance和diffuse irradiance的不同。
影片也介紹了solar towers和solar panels的優勢和劣勢,
也展望未來能克服太陽能供應的fluctuation問題,
以讓傳統發電廠充做backup。
未來預測雲層,
有效使用太陽能,
將是關鍵。

Grammar's great divide: The Oxford comma
Grammar's great divide: The Oxford comma
文法大差異: 牛津逗號
什麼是the Oxford comma?
我們先來看定義:
The serial comma/ Oxford comma:
The final comma in a list, placed directly before the main conjunction,
such as and, or, or nor.
在列舉一連串的人或事物時,
在系列最後的人或物前的and、or或nor之前到底要不要加逗點呢?
The Oxford comma,有Oxford之名,
源自於 Oxford Univeristy Press,
卻最常用在美式英語。
影片中舉個例子:
要是有人發簡訊,要你幫忙辦派對:
bring Bob, a DJ and a clown.
若是and之前沒有逗號,
我們很容易以為
Bob= a DJ and a clown。
Bob真是多才多藝。
但是簡訊最有可能要傳達的訊息應為帶三人赴宴:
1. Bob
2. a DJ
3. a clown
由這個例子可以看出來,
牛津逗號能避免ambiguity。
但是
Bob, a DJ and a puppy
如果在and前面加逗點,
還是有困擾。
到底是
Bob= a DJ
+ a puppy,
還是
1. Bob
2. a DJ
3. a puppy?
再思考這個例子:
everyone had a great time -
ninjas, pirates, vikings, old and young.
到底是哪些人參加了派對呢?
新聞界人士不喜歡牛津逗號,
因為它佔版面空間,
讓版面顯得擁擠。
目前為止,
英式英語及美式英語對牛津逗號的爭論已暫時有共識:
...its use is optional and depends on whether it will help to avoid confusion。
但如果要用就要通篇文章一致,
這就不是optional了。
其實用或不用,
都是要思考。
因為 Little things can make a big difference。

Working Backward to Solve Problems
Working Backward to Solve Problems
西洋棋大師Maurice Ashely分享如何用
retrograde analysis (回溯分析)來解決殘局謎題:
...in order to look ahead, it pays to look backwards.
retrograde analysis (回溯分析)應用的層面很廣。
他解釋人慣於邏輯性思考,
因此會略過不合邏輯的現象,
例如以下這個例子:
After reading this sentence, you will realize that the the brain
doesn't recognize a second "the".
我們在閱讀時,
常會忽略the the brain之前的第二個the,
但如果用retrograde analysis (回溯分析),
由後面往前讀,
brain the the,
就可查覺錯誤,
這個方法適用於校對文章時。
影片中還有兩個用retrograde analysis (回溯分析)的例子,
也很有趣。
Maurice Ashely也舉了應用retrograde analysis (回溯分析)於電影情節的例子:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
(班傑明的奇幻旅程)
有如殘局,
我們要怎麼的人生,
要回溯分析,
才不浪費生命。
他舉出片中常被引用的話:
Youth is wasted on the young.
(青春浪擲青春時)。
*Well, if you can see the end game, your youth will not be wasted on you.
從下棋觀人生,
引人思考。

The Wonderful World of Words
The Wonderful World of Words
字的天地,
何等廣濶。
Justin Tonna分享了文字的美妙與影響力。
在網際網路的時代,
我們是否忘了開卷有益的興奮感?
是否已忽略了文字的曼妙?
當我們在言談中用"lol"代替開懷大笑,
我們是否錯失了什麼?
當我們和別人溝通時,
我們真的說對話,用對字嗎?
Justin Tonna點出文字的重要性,
You can have power over your lives
by improving how you master words.
這場演講也是逐夢的分享,
Justin Tonna歷經職涯的轉換,
終於找到他的志業,
他能發揮熱情的工作。
他鼓勵我們:
Follow your dream!
也鼓勵我們善用文字表達愛。
Be careful what you say.
Words have huge power.
相信自己,
將Impossible,
改為I'm possible!

Overcoming Obstacles
Overcoming Obstacles
這部影片
以動畫描述Steven Claunch的生命歷程,
他生來一手一腳都有殘缺,
但如同洋基獨臂投手 Jim Abbott,
在棒球場大放光彩,
Steven Claunch也在籃球天地
找到一片天。
他的故事很有激勵性。
讓我們勇敢面對障礙,
跨越障礙,
發揮能力,
證明自己真的做得到!
* We face a choice: Let the obstacle overcome you or overcome the obstacle.
* But what they don't know is that I don't just have a disability, I have an ability.
*I will not use the obstacles I face as an excuse for having a pity party. I will
practice harder, play harder, and push myself harder to keep getting better.
* Everyone has obstacles to overcome. Some are visible like mine. Some are less
visible.
*If someone thinks you can't overcome the obstacles, prove them wrong.

A brief history of plural word...s
A brief history of plural word...s
學英文,
名詞的複數形成,
也是必要的功課。
一般來說,
大都是在名詞的字尾加-s或-es。
但少數的名詞,
可不按照這個規則,
例如
man - men
woman - women
goose - geese等等。
你有可能奇想,
為何moose的複數是mooses,而不是meese?
為何foot的複數是feet,
而book的複數是books,而不是beek呢?
其實在1000年前,
book的複數真的是beek!
名詞複數在古英語,
是很複雜的。
John McWhorter認為
If Modern English is strange, Old English needed therapy.
英語的變化要從2500年前說起,
英語和德語為同一語言,
也就是非生物的名詞都有gender。
例如
A fork - a woman
A spoon - a man
a table - neuter
後來二分為途,
英語表達更簡化,
不再需要考慮gender。
但是古英語複雜的複數形成要等到第八世紀,
Vikings(維京人)征服英國,
才出現曙光。
這些維京人已成年,
學新語言不容易,
就針對複雜的部分進行簡化,
例如名詞的複數。
之前
goat - gat
也有在字尾加入音節,
例如
child - children
lamb - lambru
ox - oxen
也有單複數同形
例如
sheep - sheep
house - house。
至於少數不規則的複數名詞,
例如
child - children
tooth - teeth
仍保留至今,
是因為用習慣,
不好改。
John McWhorter打趣說,
要不是維京人,
我們現在用的peanut複數,
將不是peanuts,
而仍舊是pea-night喔!

Why is there a “b” in doubt?
Why is there a “b” in doubt?
英語裡的doubt
動詞意思為
to question,
to waver,
to hesitate。
名詞意思為
uncertainty or confusion。
學習這個字,
不免有困惑。
為何b不發音,
卻在拼字裡呢?
其實是有語言史的淵源。
doubt這個字源自於拉丁文的 "dubitare"。
當doubt進到法語時,
第二個b的音和拼字都不見了。
這個字在13世紀進入英語字彙,
但要等到100年之後,
懂拉丁文的抄寫者,
又把d還原到doubt,
因為
...the "b" was kept because it marked important,
meaningful connections to other related words,
例如 "dubious" and "indubitalbly,"
都來自同一字源。
但是故事並不僅於如此。
doubt和double這兩個字,
有其關連。
英語的base words,
就只有這兩個字有"d-o-u-b",
再各自擴充字彙:
doubtful and doubtless,
or doublet, redouble, and doubloon。
The meaning of double, two,
is reflected in a deep understanding of doubt.
我們心中有懷疑時,
是否常會「三心二意」?
事實上,
英語裡沒有向法文借用 doubt這個字之前,
就是用"tweogan"。
很有趣的字源與拼字的故事。

The Secret Life of Pronouns
The Secret Life of Pronouns
James Pennebaker
從言談、語料分析指出
我們運用語言,
使用的內容,
透露了許多訊息,
諸如內心的狀態,
地位高低,
團隊互動等等。
英語的字彙分為
content words:nouns, regular verbs, adjectives, adverbs
function words: pronouns, prepositions, auxiliary verbs等等
在英語裡function words大約有500個,
它們看起來有點boring,
只佔了我們所知道、聽到、閱讀的字中不到1%,
但它們反映了55%-60%我們所接觸的字,
我們顯少注意這些看似微不足道的字,
但是James Pennebaker的研究卻指出這些字”profoundly social”!
James Pennebaker發現言語裡使用function words的狀況,
可以反映出
who people are,
what their relationships are,
how they think about themselves,
and how they connect with others.
這場演講裡,
他以代名詞為例,
指出常用第三人稱代名詞(he、she、they)的人,
比較能關注他人,
人際互動較熱絡。
而常使用第一人稱代名詞I的人,
往往地位較低,較關注自己,
也可能是比較depressed的人。
常用第一人稱代名詞I的人也比較honest。
因此他將這些研究,
用於測謊、
預測人際互動發展
及研究團隊溝通等,
真是奇妙!
James Pennebaker期盼聽眾
也從自己的言語及網際互動,
跨出更了解自我的一步。

Grammar, Identity, and the Dark Side of the Subjunctive
Grammar, Identity, and the Dark Side of the Subjunctive
假設語氣,
曾是許多英語學習者的夢魘,
超難學的。
但是Phuc Tran在這場演講中,
經由他自身及家族的經歷,
陳述假設語氣,
在他人生中扮演的角色,
及他的覺醒及領悟。
他指出語言有三種語氣:
indicative, subjunctive, and imperative。
他的母語越南語並沒有假設語氣,
因此語言表達務實,
也使人們更富resiliency和strength。
反觀英語,
因為有假設語氣,
成為Phuc Tran年少時的mirage of an oasis,
讓他有夢,
忘卻現實的黯淡。
但當他上大學,
卻面臨困境,
是他父親直接的建言點醒了他:
...Don’t study something you don’t like. What do you like? Study that.
他因此省思了假設語氣和直說法的差異:
The subjunctive allows us to innovate, but it also allows us to become mired in regret. The indicative does not allow us to imagine at all, but it does allow us to talk about ourselves and our experience in real terms (especially if we have the courage to engage that reality.)
他的提醒:
We all use the indicative and subjunctive everyday, and we can be mindful of when we’re blinded by the indicative and when we can’t see the subjunctive around us.
演講中Phuc Tran大量使用假設語氣,
也舉了Star Wars (星際大戰)人物運用語氣陳述的方式,
非常有趣!
對想學假設語氣,
弄懂它的學習者,
看了,
將更懂它的意涵和影響力。

natural selection, the struggle for survival, and sexual selection, the struggle for reproductive opportunity.
螢火蟲之光,
是求偶的光,
談情說愛:
It's amazing to think that the luminous displays we admire here and in fact everywhere around the world are actually the silent love songs of male fireflies. They're flying and flashing their hearts out. I still find it very romantic.
...
These creatures speak their love in the language of light.
但是螢火蟲的世界
不盡是愛,
也有為了自己的安全防護,
欺騙別的螢火蟲,以吸取toxins的firefly vampire。

螢火蟲的世界,
一樣充滿虛虛實實。
Sara Lewis也提醒大家,
夏夜的螢火蟲,
也在銳減中,
因為土地的開發,
因為光害,
因此我們要重視這個問題:
I hope we can find a way to keep these bright lights shining.

Want to innovate? Become a "now-ist"
Want to innovate? Become a "now-ist"
因為科技,
相對照BI (before the Internet),
世界變得更複雜,
速度更快,
更能預測,
但相對也extremely low-cost。
Joi Ito
因為日本強震導致輻幅射外洩,
擔心家人安全,
而在網路找到一群人共同開發出能顯示地區輻射的資料。
這次的合作和成果反映了創新將朝向新的方向,
由an MBA-driven innovation model
轉向 a designer-engineer-driven innovation model。
開創的模式由
Publish or perish
→
Demo or die
進到
Deploy or die。
他提示藉由網路,創新將推至極至,
但方式將不同。
It's a bottom-up innovation, it's democratic, it's chaotic, it's hard to control. It's not bad, but it's very different, and I think that the traditional rules that we have for institutions don't work anymore, and most of us here operate with a different set of principles. One of my favorite principles is the power of pull, which is the idea of pulling resources from the network as you need them rather than stocking them in the center and controlling everything.
Joi Ito求學之路艱辛,
他提出對教育的深刻體悟:
Education is what people do to you and learning is what you do to yourself.
他鼓勵大家
What you need to learn is how to learn.
方法要不同了,
要運用Compass over maps.
I think it's about stopping this notion that you need to plan everything, you need to stock everything, and you need to be so prepared, and focus on being connected, always learning, fully aware, and super present.
並以
So I don't like the word "futurist." I think we should be now-ists, like we are right now.
做為結論。
創新之路,
就在此時。
因為科技,
相對照BI (before the Internet),
世界變得更複雜,
速度更快,
更能預測,
但相對也extremely low-cost。
Joi Ito
因為日本強震導致輻幅射外洩,
擔心家人安全,
而在網路找到一群人共同開發出能顯示地區輻射的資料。
這次的合作和成果反映了創新將朝向新的方向,
由an MBA-driven innovation model
轉向 a designer-engineer-driven innovation model。
開創的模式由
Publish or perish
→
Demo or die
進到
Deploy or die。
他提示藉由網路,創新將推至極至,
但方式將不同。
It's a bottom-up innovation, it's democratic, it's chaotic, it's hard to control. It's not bad, but it's very different, and I think that the traditional rules that we have for institutions don't work anymore, and most of us here operate with a different set of principles. One of my favorite principles is the power of pull, which is the idea of pulling resources from the network as you need them rather than stocking them in the center and controlling everything.

就在此時。
