Reader's Digest, January 2009
In this issue, I found the following two articles quite helpful.
1. "In Pursuit of Happiness"
It says that happiness is something that can be learnt, much like healthy eating habits.
What a blissful message it is!
Some ways to get happy are also suggested in this article, for example,
practice random act of kindness, or set aside time to do something new.
In my friend's June's blog, she shared 15 habits of happiness, ideas from an article in CommonWealth Magazine issue 414. They are also feasible ways to achieve
happiness of life.
2. "The Power of One"
The 2004 tsunami changed Jet Li forever. Now he wants to change the world.
Jet Li and his daughters were caught up in the real-life horror of the devastating
tsunami that hit on 26 December, 2000. After the incident, he came to realize
that however powerful or famous he was, it could not help him in the nick of life
and death. Through this realization, he decided to do something to make the
world a better place. He founded the Red Cross Jet Li One Foundation to support
international disaster relief efforts. He believes that think big by thinking small. If
everyone gives one yuan every month, it will add up to billions. This time, Jet Li
aims to make a real difference in the world.

(e.g. I have nothing to do with...),才能

The True Story of Pocahontas
This book, an easy reader, helps readers
understand the culture and beliefs of Indians better.
Personally, I enjoy the movie, "Pocahontas" and the beautiful song, "Colors of the Wind" a lot. In fact, they have aroused my interest in knowing more about the Indian princess Pocahontas. Reading this book, The True Story of Pocahontas shed new light on her life, Indian life, and the origins of Virginia.
There are four chapters in this book:
1. The Sailing Ship
Seeing a big sailing ship in the bay, Pocahontas was very
excited, but her father, Chief Powhatan was quite concerned
because he thought the coming of the white men would only
bring them big problems.
2. Pocahontas meets John Smith
Captain John Smith and his men came to establish a small
establishment there, later called Jamestown. But when
looking for food, John Smith and his men killed two Indians.
Hence he was captured and sentenced to death. But
fortunately Pocahontas came to rescue his life.
(History background: The Origins of Virginia)
3. Winter in Jamestown
Winter came to Jamestown. The settlers there had little
food to eat. Were it not for the help of Pocahontas and other
Indians, many more settlers would have starved to death.
Pocahontas saved John Smith once again by notifying him
that his life was in danger. After this adventure, John Smith
returned to England.
4. Chief Powhatan declares War!
Chief Powhatan declared war against the white settlers.
Pocahontas was sent to live with the Potomac Indians. But
she was trapped and sent to Jamestown.
(History background: Indian Life)
5. Pocahontas falls in Love
In Jamestown, Pocahontas met her future husband, John
Rolfe, a white man. In 1614, they got married. It was
believed that their marriage brought peace to the
Virginia Colony.
Soon after their marriage, the couple went to London.
Pocahontas was warmly received by the people in the big
city. Surprisingly, she met John Smith, whom she thought
had been dead.
Pocahontas and John Rolfe had a son. But after the birth of
her son, Pocahontas became very sick and died at the age
of 21. Though her life was a short one, this Indian
princess was remembered by many people for her
courage and compassion showed in her friendship toward
the English settlers of Jamestown.

Annie & Mary: Good morning, everyone.
Annie: It's time for a sentence a day. I'm Annie.
Mary: I'm Mary.
Annie: The top of the week is "Drinking more water." First,
let's review the sentence we learned yesterday.
Drinking water is good for you.
Jerry:
Annie: Drinking water is good for you.
Jerry:
Annie: Now listen to the conversation. Do you drink a lot of
water every day, Jerry?
Jerry: No, I don't.
Annie: Why not?
Jerry: I drink a lot of coke every day.
Annie: Jerry, you should drink less coke but more water.
Jerry: Yes, I know, Ms. Chan.
Annie: Good. How about you, Mary?
Mary: I drink at least eight glasses of water every day.
Annie: You sure have a healthy way of life, Mary.
Remember, drinking water is good for you.
Annie: Now, let's learn more about drinking water today.
Our sentence today is "If you drink enough water, you
will get healthy skin."
Annie: Jerry, will you please explain this sentence for us?
Jerry: Yes, sure. If you drink enough water, you will get
healthy skin.
If you drink enough
我們來看一下主要子句you will get healthy skin。will+動詞
healthy"
Annie: Now repeat the sentence after me. If you drink enough
water, you will get healthy skin.
Jerry: If you drink enough water, you will get healthy skin.
Annie: Now repeat the sentence after me. If you drink enough
water, you will get healthy skin.
Jerry: If you drink enough water, you will get healthy skin.
Annie: Drinking water is good for you. If you drink enough
water, your skin will sure look better.
Annie: That's all for today. Thank you for your listening.
Goodbye.

The Trumpet of the Swan
I bought this book long ago, but I never found the right time or had the right mood to read it. I know it's a book worth reading since my best friend, June, once highly recommended it. She even shared the plot of the story with me. But not until yesterday did I open the book once again and begin to read it. At the beginning, I didn't expect myself to enjoy the book so much. But to my great surprise, I read the book from cover to cover in less than a day. Well, the book touched my heart deeply.
The book is a wonderful one about courage, freedom and love. The main character of the story is Louis, a Trumpeter Swan. But sadly enough, he is different from any of his brothers or sisters because he is mute. For a Trumpeter Swan, lacking a voice is not only defective but also disadvantageous when finding a mate.
Louis's father, the cob, decided to give a hand to solve his problem. He broke into a music store and made off with a beautiful brass trumpet. He wanted the trumpet to be his son's voice. In sacrificing his own honor, the cob wished his son to have a new and better life.
Louis accepted his father's great gift, but he was also burdened with guilt. He decided to do something to compensate for what his father had done for him. With effort and determination, he learned to play the trumpet. Owing to his musical talent and the trumpet, he not only fulfilled his commitment to repay the owner of the music store for the stolen trumpet but also won the heart of Serena, the swan of his desiring.
Another point to mention is the friendship between Sam, a bird lover, and Louis. Sam met Louis when he was a cygnet, a baby Trumpeter Swan. At every turn of Louis's life, Sam was the one who came to help. How deep and blissful is the friendship between them! The book is a definitely a must-read. Read it and enjoy it!

"High School Musical."
It's about love between two teenagers, Gabriella and Troy.
They are both brilliant, but in different ways.
Yet, through singing and dancing, they find their potential and
mutual bond.
Yes, love makes everything possible.
It's a happy romantic story, and in most ways, entertaining.
If possible, watch the movie and listen to the theme songs, too.

How?

3. Form a study group.

Happy Birthday Therapy!
Each birthday is one step higher up the mountain.
Behold the view that becomes clearer and more expansive as you climb,
that continually unfolds more and more of
its glory before you!
---Lisa Engelhardt
It's delightful and thoughtful to read this book on my birthday, for
this book provides some unique views about birthdays.
For example,
It says that count a blessing for every candle on your cake. Celebrate the abundance of your life.
It also reminds readers not to ignore their birthdays:
Don't ignore your birthday. A birthday is a wonderful opportunity for renewing, rejuvenating, rejoicing!
So read this book, and believe that your birthday is your special day, and once again,
tell yourself that you are special. Build your confidence on your birthday. Live your life mindfully and passionately. And go for your dreams!

365 Meditations for Teachers
The best way to learn is to teach.
We gain more knowledge about a subject
and how to teach it from pupils than from
any book.
---Greg Henry Quinn
This is a book that I treasure a lot. I read it again and again. Each time I read it, it gives me a new perspective into teaching. It never fails to remind me what teaching is really about.
This book contains 365 selected quotes from teachers and educators. The reader can read a quote a day and finish the whole book in one year.
Each quote is thought-inspiring.
Here are some cited from the book.
1. February 12
No matter how small, acknowledge the achievement.
2. May 23
He is wealthiest who gives the most.
3. September 7
Changing your attitude is always more successful than changing your
circumstances.
Just as it is told on the November 19 entry:
When one stops learning, one stops growing. When one stops growing, one stops.
This book inspires readers to keep learning and reflecting about teaching.

Chicken Soup for the Mother and Son Soul
No language can express the power and beauty and heroism and majesty of a mother's love.
---Edwin Hubbell Chapin
A mother's love is limitless, abundant in joy, support, and forgiveness. This book is about the great love of mothers for their sons, the strong bond between mothers and sons, and the all aspects of the loving relationship between them.
The book contains eight parts:
1. Special Moments
"My Sinking Heart" describes the loneliness of a mother whose son is away serving in the navy. She misses her son terribly on her birthday. She doesn't expect him to return to celebrate her 50th birthday with her. But to her great surprise and joy, her son disguises himself as a firefighter, appearing at her surprise birthday party. What a great strong bond between the mother and the son!
2. Boys Will be Boys
"Wassup?" is about the challenge a mother encounters during his son's teen years. The mother is bewildered with her son's way of communication- using one or two words to convey the main idea. She endeavors to conceive a way to communicate with her son. But to the end, she accepts that it's just a phase of growing.
3. A Mother's Love
4. A Son's Love
Just as Pindar says, " Every gift, though it be small, is in reality great if given with affection." This touching story describes how a loving mother cherishes her son's gift-a string necklace made of hand-colored macaroni pieces. She wears it everywhere she goes and shows it to everyone who admires this special gift. As time passes, the necklace is broken and forgotten. But to her great surprise, over twenty-five years later, the son of the loving mother presents her a small box with a pearl necklace in it. He gives his mother the special gift because he wants to thank his mother's genuine appreciation of his small gift of the string necklace when he is a small boy.
It's a touching story to read.
