I bought this book long ago, but I never found the right time or had the right mood to read it. I know it's a book worth reading since my best friend, June, once highly recommended it. She even shared the plot of the story with me. But not until yesterday did I open the book once again and begin to read it. At the beginning, I didn't expect myself to enjoy the book so much. But to my great surprise, I read the book from cover to cover in less than a day. Well, the book touched my heart deeply.
The book is a wonderful one about courage, freedom and love. The main character of the story is Louis, a Trumpeter Swan. But sadly enough, he is different from any of his brothers or sisters because he is mute. For a Trumpeter Swan, lacking a voice is not only defective but also disadvantageous when finding a mate.
Louis's father, the cob, decided to give a hand to solve his problem. He broke into a music store and made off with a beautiful brass trumpet. He wanted the trumpet to be his son's voice. In sacrificing his own honor, the cob wished his son to have a new and better life.
Louis accepted his father's great gift, but he was also burdened with guilt. He decided to do something to compensate for what his father had done for him. With effort and determination, he learned to play the trumpet. Owing to his musical talent and the trumpet, he not only fulfilled his commitment to repay the owner of the music store for the stolen trumpet but also won the heart of Serena, the swan of his desiring.
Another point to mention is the friendship between Sam, a bird lover, and Louis. Sam met Louis when he was a cygnet, a baby Trumpeter Swan. At every turn of Louis's life, Sam was the one who came to help. How deep and blissful is the friendship between them! The book is a definitely a must-read. Read it and enjoy it!
