Diary of a Wimpy Kid(遜迦日記: 葛瑞的中學求生記)

Diary  of a Wimpy Kid
(遜迦日記: 葛瑞的中學求生記)

diary of a Wimpy Kid.jpg
一本讓人體會閱讀的幸福的書
---目不轉睛、會心一笑、開心閱讀
---文字、小說情節超極有趣
---文字+漫畫趣味横生

一本讓我在24小時之內,
利用每個空檔,
聚精會神閱讀,
並熬夜看完的書。

小說主角:
Greg Heffley, a lean seven-grader in a new school, not very athletic or  honest, and also  a kid too concerned with his self-image

小說中有趣的情節:
Halloween
Greg的難兄難弟Rowley Jefferson原本在Halloween要裝扮成a knight with a helmet and a shield and a real sword and everything,但是他的媽媽
為了他的安全,將他的造型改成令人哭笑不得的裝扮:
She cut out a big hole in the front of the helmet so he could
see better, and covered him up in all this reflective tape. She made
him wear his winter coat underneath everything, and she replaced his sword with a glow stick.

Greg的媽媽不放心Greg帶著三歲的Manny到危險的地方去trick-or-treat (不給糖就搗蛋),因此要Greg的爸爸帶他們去。Greg的爸爸原本不想去,但是
Dad tried  to squirm out of it, but once Mom makes up her mind,
there's no way you can change it.

在討糖吃的路途中,Manny和另一孩童Jeremy跟本不配合Greg規劃的討糖路線,因為Manny and Jeremy wouldn't trick-or-treat at any houses wiith spooky decorations on them, so that ruled out pretty much every house on our block.

Greg和Rowley終究克服種種困難,討了一袋滿滿的糖,但是人算不如天算,劇情的發展著實令人捧腹大笑...

書中還有許多有趣的情節,例如the Crossland High School haunted
house (pp. 50-59),the wrestling unit (pp.76-93), the school play
(pp.95-113),都是可看性高,趣味十足!

這一本也是學習道地口語的好機會,尤其是貼切地運用idioms,例如
p. 89

Then Dad said if I wanted a bench press, I should keep my fingers crossed for Christmas.

p. 167

When we tried to think up some jokes, we kind of hit a wall.

p. 189

In fact, now that I think of it, Rowley has been TOTALLY giving me the cold shoulder lately.

這是一本值得對學習英語有興趣的人閱讀的書,
程度佳的,樂在其中,
程度尚可的,則可以從中找到閱讀的趣味,並建立信心。

閱讀Diary  of a Wimpy Kid,

1. notice=no+tice
2. inside=in+side
很為這位同學高興,因為他漸漸地體悟用音節背單字的策略。

b10d71a3.jpg一些同學則從聽寫中發現他們背單字的問題:
1. 無法確實掌握單字的發音
    例如將airport聽成April。
2. 沒有確實分辨單字的母音
    例如混淆least/list、mat/mate、sour/sore、waste/west
                 等。
3. 字尾的發音沒記熟
例如ninth/knife、north/nose、swim/swing等。

如何背單字:
以下提供一些背單字的方法:
1. 了解單字

  bake

【bek】動詞 (baking;baked;baked)  (音標/詞類/動詞三態)
To cook food in an oven.
烤; 烘  (中/英意思)
  bake a cake/bread  (片語)
Mary is baking a cake for her daughter. (例句)

2. 除了懂得單字的意思之外,更要將單字及例句開口唸出來,增加學習的印象。
    多學、多應用字彙才是正確的學習方法。

3. 了解拼字和讀音的關係
     多聽多唸將有助於聽背單字。

4. 了解單字的組合
    例如preview=pre+view、bathroom=bath+room、friendly=friend+ly等。

5. 大量閱讀將有助於背誦單字及增加單字的熟悉度。

6. 利用圖畫字典,掌握圖與單字聯結。

Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms

Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms

dictionary of idioms.jpg
Reference tools may be a dime a dozen in this dog-eat-dog world, but here's a soup-to-nuts
dictionary of colloquialisms that doesn't beat
around the bush...a useful (and perhaps unique) resource for kids battled by the intricacies of the English language.
----The Bulletin of the Center for Children's
Books

As you can see, this is a dictionary of idioms,
so what do "a dime a dozen', "dog-eat-dog world", "soup to nuts", and "beat around the bush" mean?
Consult the dictionary, and you can get what they really mean.
1. A dime a dozen:
very common and inexpensive; easy to get and available anywhere (p.46)
2. dog-eat-dog world:
a way of life marked by fierce competition in which people compete ruthlessly for survival or success  (p.47)
3. from soup to nuts:
the whole thing from beginning to end  (p.69)
4. beat around the bush:
to avoid answering a question; to approach something carefully
or in a roundabout way (p.8)

Besides giving the meaning of each idiom, the dictionary also presents an example sentence and its origin. Let's take "easy as pie" as an example.
Easy as Pie
Sample sentence

I thought that getting my teacher to raise my grade would be as easy as pie.

Meaning: not difficult; requiring practically no effort

Origin: There are two similar modern idioms that mean extremely easy; “easy as pie” and “piece of cake.” Why should they both relate to baked desserts? Perhaps to the people who coined the phrases, desserts were easier to make than other foods.

Isn't it quite interesting?

How to use this dictionary?
This dictionary is organized from A to Z. Look for the meaning or origin of an idiom by looking under the first letter word of that idiom.
And you can also consult the alphabetical index and key word index at the back of this book.
  Alphabetical Index
  A to Z
  Ace UP Your Sleeve
  Achilles' Heel
  ....
  Key Word Index
   B

  …

   Bell(s)  Ring a bell

   Bells and whistles

   Saved by the bell

  ...
As the author, Marvin Terban, puts it,

English is a beautiful and rich language, but its many idioms are often tough nuts to crack. This Dictionary of Idioms should help make understanding these says as easy as pie.

Use this dictionary and have fun learning English.

順理成章

講理就好 7
順理成章---希望,給生命力量!

順理成章---希望,給生命力量.jpg「教育心中留」---
提昇教育、開啟孩子的心智才是國家長久之計。
---洪蘭講理就好 7
順理成章---希望,給生命力量!
一共有7篇,以下為書中讓我感動且深思的話語:

第1篇 燈要點在老百姓心中

第2篇 打開心胸,讓希望進來
"生命必須往前看才活得下去"
harts.gif
情緒維持幾秒,心情維持一天,性情終身打造。我們可以從情緒著手,改變心情,穩定成性情。
harts.gif
從自己的心打造起,快樂就在身邊。
"打開心胸,讓希望進來"
harts.gif
希望是在挫折、危難時,鼓舞個體不斷工作的力量。
"讓孩子領會學習的真正目的"
harts.gif
知識是相通的,讀得多,背景知識豐富,就容易吸收。

第3篇 付諸行動,讓世界不一樣
"品德:看不見的競爭力"
harts.gif
品德是一個國家看不見的競爭力,一個國家的強盛與否在於這個國家國民的品質。
"付諸行動,讓世界不一樣"
harts.gif
人生一定要做一件對別人有益的事,讓我們從今天開始、付諸行動,讓世界不一樣。

第4篇 把我們放在我的前面
"有心就有美麗的成長空間"
"流過汗水的果實最甜美"
harts.gif
只有挑戰性與新鮮感會帶給我們持久的滿足感覺,滿足不是目標的達成,
而是達成目標的過程,沒有意義的快樂不能持久。
"做你所愛,愛你所做"
harts.gif
人一定要把握機會隨時充實自己,才不會被社會淘汰,同時,在自己成功後還要想辦法幫助別人。

第5篇 善用大腦的可塑性
"活到老,記到老"
"多元化才有競爭的本錢"
harts.gif

Creating a Bullying-free Classroom

Creating a Bullying-free Classroom

Creating a Bullying-free Classroom.jpg
When a school is an exciting positive place to be, students tend to respect the rules and actively engage in productive activities.
---Carol S. McMullen
Bullying is rampant in many schools around the world. It’s a problem that cannot be neglected. In this book, the author, Carol McMullen, teaches teachers how to set up a “bully-proofing” plan with the following tips:

1. Teach students to create and practice class rules based on the
    standards of behavior.
2. Teach them to distinguish between conflicts and bullying
    situations.
3. Teach them to learn and practice ten safe strategies to use
    when facing a bully.
4. Teach them to make a personal bully-proof plan based on their
    unique strengths.
5. Teach them how their roles as active bystanders can diffuse
    bullying situations.
6. Teach them to build confidence by taking on responsibilities in
    the class community.
7. Teach them the how-to’s of being a friend.
8. Teach them to master a three-step problem-solving model to
    resolve conflicts with peers.

We teachers all need to help build a learning environment that is safe and happy for the students.
