引述美國在收購印第安人土地時，
當時的酋長Chief Seattle寫給第十四任總統Franklin Pierce的一封信的部分內容。
我在網路上找到相關的文章，細細
品味珍愛自然的一片心。

Chief Seattle's Letter

• 1. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it.
• 2. We love this earth as a newborn loves its mother's heartbeat. So, if we sell you our land, love it as we have loved it. Care for it, as we have cared for it. Hold in your mind the memory of the land as it is when you receive it. Preserve the land for all children, and love it, as God loves us.

Miss Potter: The Novel

會想看Miss Potter: The Novel只因為對Peter Rabbit的一份好奇與好感，但閱讀之中卻有許多的領受與感動。

• 1. 我喜歡Beatrix Potter那股熱愛創作的勁和投入：

"When I see a beautiful object, I am overcome by a desire to copy it. Sometimes I ask myself, "Why can't you be content to look at it?" But I cannot rest. I must draw."

• 2. Beatrix Potter是個充滿好奇與能欣賞美的人。在書中她指著她的sketchbook對著William Heelis (her future husband)說：

"I am collecting Wonders. And putting them down in my book."

• 3. Beatrix Potter富想像力，腦中常呈現圖像，將生活中觀察到人生百態一一描繪在她的動物世界裡。常常她信手拈來，就是一個新的動物角色，相對應的verse，她源源不絕的靈感讓她的創作獨特又吸引人。
• 4. 其實這本書中有許多部分在描述Beatrix Potter所置身的社會，講究排場和身份，這和Beatrix Potter的本性格格不入，因此她其實是lonely。但創作因為需要專注，有時候loneliness是必要的。Beatrix Potter在書中曾對密友Millie 說過：

"Being unmarried. We're free. Free of the burdens that drag down other women. Free to pursue our independent spirits and our creativity."

但是Beatrix Potter最終仍是找到她的true love。而根據書後語：

Beatrix Potter published only a few additional stories after her marriage。  

   這本書仍有許多耐人尋味的地方，Beatrix Potter和她的出版商 (A trademan!)短暫的邂逅與分離對她的心境和創作產生巨大的影響。但我最感興趣的仍是她創作的過程與出書的喜悅，這也是這本書中著墨比較深刻而動人的部分。

每回閱讀Reader's Digest，總不願意錯過任何一篇文章。更確實的說，不錯過任何文字，包含編輯的話、讀者迴響、廣告、圖片說明等等。因為實在喜歡Reader's Digest的文字風格及選文，除了增進閱讀的能力，更能從一則則引發人深思、觸動人心的文章，讓人有更開濶的心胸與更廣闊的視野。

本期Reader's Digest中我最喜歡的文章：

• 1. The Medicine Maker:

Krisana Kraisintu has fought tirelessly to get her generic AIDS and malaria drugs to the people who need them most.

一個醫學能救人的真實故事。Krisana Kraisintu以"If you have the opportunity

to do good, you should."信念努力研發救人醫藥行善。Krisana Kraisintu不畏權威，為了病人的權益，"If I feel something is not fair, I have to fight."。 Krisana Kraisintu著實令人佩服。

• 2. Monkey Do:

When she's not sneaking the peanut butter, this highly trained capuchin is the best caretaker a guy could have.

一隻受過看護訓練的monkey協助行動不便的人，讓一個原本對人生不再有期待的人，找到生命的出口。

種子如不經過在堅硬的泥土中掙扎奮鬥的過程，

它將止於是一粒乾癟種子，

而永遠不能發芽滋長成一株大樹。

本書分為五個章節：

• 1. 做人最重要的是心態
• 2. 做人要有成功的個性
• 3. 做人要有一定的原則
• 4. 做一個踏實的人
• 5. 做一個意志堅定的人

書中有許多勵志的故事，讓我印象深刻的是：

• 1. 沙漠裡也能找到星星

一位婦人隨著軍官先生駐防布在北非的埃及，沙漠中的生活讓她覺得生活單調難熬。但是她父親鼓勵她從平淡的生活中尋找「星星和月亮」，因此開啟她截然不同的人生。而這位婦人後來也成為沙漠專家。

• 2. 心靈也要有一個堅持的理由

一個窮小孩為了買一個地理書嘗試了六家書店，前五家都因為他並沒有足夠的書款而拒絕他。但第六家的店員問明他買這本書的緣由，協助他買到舊書，

一圓他閱讀此書並了解已逝的水手父親曾走過的足跡。

    分享書中佳句：

    1. 心態決定一切。

    2. 樂觀的性格能使幸福常伴左右，樂觀源於快樂的心境。

    3. 多聽也是一把交流的鑰匙，它同樣使人覺得耳目一新。

    4. 比天空更廣闊的是人的胸懷。

    5. 能掌握工作與休息之間的脈動，才是持續擁有無窮動力的寶貴智能。

    6. 踏實的人應該勇於向新事物、新知識發起挑戰。

Relationships

Relationships是一本探討家庭、朋友與人和動物的層層關係和情感。

本書內容分為Fiction、Essays、Poetry和Drama四大類別。各個作品皆出自名家之手，因此閱讀時，不僅能體會文字的曼妙，更常為故事的情節而感動。

本書中也提出對relationships的看法：

Before you can form strong relationships with other people, it's important to know who you are yourself. And if you want others to like you, it helps if you like yourself, too.

這些作品中我印象最深刻為"A Kitten For Mrs. Ainsworth"，敘述一隻流浪貓和一貴婦之間的友誼。這隻流浪貓偶而會到婦人家"Just creeps in, has some food, then flits away."。但是日積月累的互動和信任讓它在生命結束前，來到貴婦的家，將它的kitten交付給該婦人--- A special Christmas gift for Mrs. Ainsworth。

"The Kid Nobody Could Handle"則是敘述一位因為家庭因素而成為問題少年的成長歷程。是教師的愛和包容改變了他頑強的心：

Teachers play an important role in our lives---particularly those who take a special interest in us and make us feel we matter.

"Herbert Hahn"則是敘述一位偉大的老師。作者懷念這位老師因為

• 1. He taught life, and his subject was of secondary importance.
• 2. He didn't do a lot of extra talking, but when he talked he was direct and often brilliant.
• 3. Mrs. Hahn could have taught at any college in the country, but he chose to stay at the secondary level. He didn't think teaching college-age people was any more important than teaching boys and girls fourteen to eighteen.
• 4. He was the kind of person who gave teachers the right to be proud to be teachers.

708寒假作業相關事項

708寒假一級棒英語進修計劃   

1. 每日一文	閱讀《文馨初階英文 第三冊》 每天一篇文章	1. 先略讀文章一次，掌握文章大意。 2. 再閱讀第二次，並將文章下方的註解抄入文章中。 3. 用英漢辭典 (下學期有班際查字典比賽，要多練習查字典)查出不懂的字彙。 4. 朗讀整篇文章。 5. 做文章後面的理解問題 (選項中不認識的字彙或片語)。 6. 在文章的問題後面填寫完成日期。
2. 單字補給	閱讀《國中英語2000字彙必背書》  每天一頁。	1. 試著唸出每個單字及例句。 2. 查出例句中不懂的字。 3. 標示較不懂的句子。 4. 可補充有關該單字的用法或另增一例句。
3. 句型增強	完成《康軒國中英語必學句型》第十二~第十五回	1. 先閱讀並了解每單元的句型重點。 2. 完成該單元的練習，並用紅筆訂正答案。

If the world were a village of 100 people

This small book gives us a new perspective into our life and the world.One of my friends often reminds me to count my blessings.  In this book, I get the similar message of wisdom.
For example, it tells us that
75 people have some supply of food and a place to shelter them from the wind and the rain, but 25 do not. 17 have no clean water to drink.
We should not take everything we have for granted.  Instead, we should view it as a blessing.
In this book, the author also reminds us that in this global villlage, it would be very important for us to understand people different from ourselves and to accept others as they are.
I think the most important message for us all is  to live and to love.

A warm and humorous story by Louis Sachar.

Alone in His Teacher's House is one of the marvelous books in the Marvin Redpost series by Louis Sachar.
  Martin's teacher, Mrs. North, is away for a week. She asks Martin to take care of her old dog, Waldo. She promises to give him three dollars a day, plus a four-dollar bonus if nothing goes wrong with the house or the dog. All his classmates envy him.
  At first all things go well. But soon Martin finds that Waldo has not eaten anything since Mrs. North left. Martin tries hard to get Waldo to eat. He even eats the dog food himself. But it just doesn't work. So he calls the vet, Dr. Charles. The doctor says that Waldo probably misses Mrs. North. He tells Martin to buy a quarter pound of liver and cook it because Waldo will like it. With the help of his mother, Martin cooks the liver and feeds Waldo. He is glad to see that Waldo likes it and eats it all.

  The next day, Martin goes to Mrs. North's house again. But he cannot find Waldo.

Finally he is sad to find Waldo lying under the bed. He does not move. He is dead.
  Martin calls Dr. Charles to help take care of the whole thing. He is sure that Mrs. North will get mad at him for what happens to Waldo. But to the contrary, she hugs him and thanks him for his great job. She is happy that he loves Waldo and takes good care of him.    

  Martin gets the twenty-five dollars. After all, he is the luckiest student in the class.
