當你遇見美好的事物時所要做的第一件事，
就是把它分享給你四周的人；
這樣，美好的事物才能在這個世界上自由自在的散播開來。

一本謳歌自然，貼近自然，展現生命力的書。

書中的小樹(Little Tree)在爺爺(half-Cherokee)和奶奶(Cherokee)的陪伴下度過了生命中難忘的童年。

在"Mr. Wine"這一章中談到education:

Education was a two-part proposition:

• 1. Technical: How you moved ahead in your trade
• 2. Valuing: Place a value on being honest and thrifty, on doing your best, and on caring for folks; that was more important than anything else.

小樹的爺爺從自然中教育他。

• 1. 他教他"The Way"，大自然生命萬物有其生存的法則，人類應該"Take only what ye need"。
• 2. 小樹的爺爺雖然打獵，但是"Grandpa lived with the game, not at it"。
• 3. 從獵犬追逐狐狸的事件裡，他告訴他"You can't cheat without making unnecessary trouble for yourself"。
• 4. The woods would feed you, if you lived with the woods, instead of tearing them up.
• 5. Birds, like everything else, know if you like them. If you do, then they will come all around you.

他也教育小樹了解自己的查拉幾族(Cherokee)的歷史：

"If ye don't know the past, then ye will not have a future. If ye don't know where your people have been, then ye won't know where your people are going." 

   小樹的奶奶則是唸書給他聽，教他識字，培養他閱讀的習慣。我很喜歡這本書中"I Kin Ye, Bonnie Bee" (kin=love, ye=you, Bonnie Bee=Little Tree's grandmother)這一章中，奶奶唸書給小樹及爺爺聽發生的趣事。

   這是一本有愛、有歡笑、有悲傷、有趣味、又耐人尋味的書。書中有些文字雖然拼字不同，但閱讀久了，就熟悉了，也喜歡文字呈現的風格。這真是一本吸引人並「充滿愛和了解」的書。

同時，書中也提到：

教養不全是天上掉下來的禮物，教養要靠個人的努力才能增幅，而這種努力的重心，在省思與閱讀，閱讀就要靠語文。

書中期勉讀者：

教養是個人自我的努力，省思的累積。凡閱歷過的事，都加以思維、解讀，把天賦才能發揮到極點，就會有足夠的教養。

《黃崑巖談教養》一書可以做為個人修養、家庭教育、學校教育的參考。

Hi Class 708,

Thank you for replying to my speech on B.I.G.G.  My wife and I "enjoyed" reading your messages.  She translated for me.  I hope my Chinese can improve so I can reply in Chinese someday.  For now, I will reply in English.

I have a story to share with you that will help you understand B.I.G.G.

One day an executive of a prosperous exporting company had to go on business trip and would have to be gone for a long period of time.  He had three managers to take care of his finances.  To the first manager he gave 10,000,000NT, to the second 5,000,000NT and to the third 1,000,000NT.  The executive said to the three managers, "Please take this money and put it to good use."  While their boss was away, the manager with the 10,000,000 NT used his ideas to invest money and received 10,000,000NT.  The second worked hard and received 5,000,000 NT back.  The third who received 1,000,000 NT was afraid and decided to put the money in a secret place in his house.

After a long time, the executive came back and had a meeting with his three managers.  The executive was very happy with the manager who earned 10,000,000NT.  He gave this manager more responsibility because he was very responsible.  The executive was also happy with the second manager.  The second manager also received more responsibility in the company.  When he called the third manager, this manager said that he was afraid because he knew that the executive was a shrewd and harsh boss so he hid the money in his house.

The executive was very angry.  He told the third manager that he could have at least put the money in the bank to receive interest, but he did not.  He fired the third manager.  This story is not about money.

• Why do you think the executive was angry?
• Why was the 3^rd manager afraid?
• Why were the 1^st and 2^nd manager successful?

這一期的《彭蒙惠英語》很環保，很科技，探討一些新的議題，閱讀時既能增進新知、擴充詞彙又能思索人類與自然的相關問題，多花了一些閱讀時間，也聽了朗讀CD，有比較深的體會。

• (1) "Recycling Turned Up a Notch" (回收業手法晉級)

Intercon Solutions recycling facility回收電腦等科技產品、拆解、熔煉，再做利用，事實上，很費功夫，因為他們堅持"throw nothing away"。 這一篇文章指出電子相關產品回收率只有10-15%，這也是我們需注意及關心的現象。

• (2) "LED technology could replace kerosene" (發光二極體技術可能取代煤油)

The "Forever-Bright" lamp價格低，可迅速充電，不易損壞，無污染，旨在幫助赤貧的家庭解決照明的問題，將造福許多落後地區的人。

• (3) "What is the Gulf Stream?" (何謂灣流？)

不太好懂的一篇文章，但從文章的副標題：

A meandering mass of warm water, moving 300 times stronger than the flow of all the rivers emptying into the Atlantic Ocean- a mysterious force more powerful than a million nuclear plants-just what is this, and why is it so important?

就可以看出灣流的重要。從文章探討研究灣流的歷程，實在佩服Benjamin Franklin等多人的研究與探索，解開了灣流之謎。

Reader's Digest, November 2007這一期的Reader's Digest讓我受益頗多，
(1) "How I Saved My Own Life"一文中體重超重的Denise Armstrong在身體出現警訊時，痛下決心減肥，她提醒自己：When I get to urge to eat something bad, I remind myself that I want to live.她利用飲食控制、調製糖尿病食譜、慢跑，將每天攝取的熱量控制在1,800卡以內。她的毅力及家人及朋友的支持終於讓她擺脫糖尿病的夢魘。減重成功的她贏得健康，也找回自信。
(2) "The Secret Men Won't Admit"一文指出男生的憂鬱症的徵候並不容易察覺，因為"Their sadness and helplessness are hidden behind a mask of anger."。
(3) "Lost and Found"介紹韓籍影星Yunjin Kim在Hollywood主演"Lost"而聲名大噪。Yunjin Kim的一些想法我很認同：
  In starting something, even though you may encounter many obstacles and no one can predict the results, you need to do your best and move toward your goals.
  Once you make a decision, never doubt yourself, and make it work.
Yunjin Kim的成功並非偶然！ 
(4) "5 Surprising Reasons to Get More Sleep"，提到充足睡眠的益處:
* It could make you thinner.
* It could boost your memory.
* It can fight colds, ulcers and even cancer.
* It can slow down ageing.
* It could keep you orderly.

不一樣並不是就是錯，
要從差異中看出每個人的獨特性，
不要嘲笑別人的夢想，
人活著，
是因為心中仍有夢。最早注意到《一百件洋裝》 (One Hundred Dresses)是閱讀
《人格特質最重要》這本書。「校園霸凌」一向是令人關注的話題，
而Ron Clark藉由這本書教導學生如何從別人的角度看事情，不要欺凌弱勢的人。

書中的主角Wanda Petroski因為有奇怪的名字，而受同學嘲弄。她每天穿著同一件褪色的藍色洋裝上學，卻曾對同學說："I got a hundred dresses home"，而遭女同學Peggy一次次的奚落。最後，Wanda的父親決定將小孩轉到城市裡，因為"...No more ask why funny name. Plenty of funny names in the big city."  
書中的另一個角色為Maddie (本書作者的化身），她對於整個霸凌事件其實一直都覺得不安，但是她卻沒有勇氣站出來。書中描述著她備受煎熬的心境： "She has done just as much as Peggy to make life miserable for Wanda by simply standing by and saying nothing. She had helped to make soemone so unhappy that she had had to move away from town."    
故事的最後，
Peggy和Maddie做了一些補償的動作，而Wanda也間接表達她的諒解和寬容。Peggy和Maddie也終究找回內心的一些平安。
深刻的故事讓人痛心！

「零霸凌」是教育必須努力的方向，讓校園多一點愛和和諧！

• 1. "A Heavy Truth"中談到醫生因為諸多的理由常未告知病人減重的必要性。事實上，只要能告知病人並採取相關的減重計畫，才能有改善的可能，因為"If you don't have a plan, you're not going to lose weight.'同時文章中提到減重對身體的益處，"Modest amounts of weight loss can disproportionately benefit overall health, even if the loss doesn't feel or look like much."。
• 2. "Back to the Tap"則談到瓶裝水為製造商帶來極大的商機，但對環境卻造成極大的影響，因此文章中提到"...giving up the bottle is easy. Jus t turn on the tap."我們必須重新思考瓶裝水的必要性或找出取代的方式。
• 3. "The Man in the Mask"則提到"Halo"(最後一戰)這個線上遊戲，設計線上遊戲的行家用盡心力，以"grinding, jeweler's meticulousness"的精細程度設計遊戲內容。"The Man in the Mask"則指的是遊戲的主角Master Chief (faceless, nameless)戴著純黃金鏡面的面罩，而這一角色是讓人玩家融入形象裡頭。線上遊戲吸引人自有其原因吧！
