仍不改其懶散成性，例如他懶的拿近在咫尺的遙控器，於是他試圖用念力讓遙控器自己飄起來：
I tried using the Force to make the remote levitate to me, even though I've tried it a million times before and it's never worked once. Today I tried for about fifteen minutes and concentrated REALLY hard, but no luck... (p.24)
有一回，Greg Heffley因為貪看電視，無心寫四頁的生物報告，於是他在報告格式上動了手腳：
I didn't have a lot of time to do any research, so I played with the margins and the font size to stretch what I had to four pages...(p.49) (看到這一段，會心一笑!)
Greg Heffley急就章寫出來的報告(p.p.50-51) 真是爆笑，真是會讓他的生物老師哭笑不得。
另一個有趣的情節為Greg Heffley在他爸爸堅持下，參加足球隊，窘態百出，根本不是踢足球的料。最後教練讓他擔任shag。Greg Heffley沾沾自喜向他的哥哥Rodrick炫耀:
I'M THE SHAG!
經Rodrick解釋之後，他才知道足球守備位置根本沒有Shag!
原來Shag=a kid who chases the ball when it goes out of bounds!
Poor Greg Heffley!
其他有趣的情節為Greg Heffley鄰居辦的"half-birthday party"，Valentine's Day (p.p.89-100)，a "Chore Coupon" book for Mother's Day (p.p.175-176)及Greg Heffley追求Holly Hills的糗事。
書本故事的最後，暑假快到了。Greg Heffley的爸爸放他一馬，不再堅持他暑假到軍校去操練，也為下一本書Diary of a Wimpy Kid Bummer Vacation預做伏筆。
書中的一些俚語也運用的恰到好處：
1. I asked Rowley to donate some items to put in the time capsule, and that's when he gets cold feet. (p.34)
(get cold feet: to suddenly become too frightened to do something you had planned to do)
2. I thought Gramma was pulling my leg, but sure enough, the regulars sent one of the ladies over to intimidate me. (p.73)
(pull one's leg: fool someone)
3. When I heard the sound of chewing, I turned on my flashlight and caught the thief red-handed. (p.82)
(catch someone red-handed: find someone in the middle of doing something wrong)
4. If you ever wanted to know why I don't like team sports, there it is in a nutshell. (p.133)
(in a nutshell: something that you say when you are describing something using as few words as possible)
另外本書的書名中的the last straw也是個俚語：
the last straw/the straw that broke the camel's back。
(典故即來自壓垮駱駝的最後一根稻草)
