Middle age spread原本的意思為「中年發福，横向發展」（注意書的封面，詮釋地很有趣味）。
而書中對middle age spread的定義可由人物的對話了解：

這本書正是書中主角John和Elly的中年生活寫照。Lynn Johnston畫出也寫出中年人的心情故事。中年人閱讀這本書對於書中的喜怒哀樂應該更了然於心。
